Dark Water

by The Lonely Together

/

about

Edinburgh’s star-gazing sons, The Lonely Together turn their heads to stormy seas, making a staggering return with ‘Dark Water’, the no-nonsense fifth cut from their long-awaited debut LP, ‘Everything Viewed Backwards Through The Rearviewmirror’.

Effortlessly conjuring the sexy swagger of ‘Somethin’ Hot’-era Afghan Whigs with angular, serrated guitars pressed up tight against the sophisticated, ominous synth-rock of ‘Papillon’-phase Editors, ‘Dark Water’ matches strides with both. It is Baillie’s urgent, searing vocal though, that captivates and enthrals above all, painting a desperate picture of embittered betrayal against an enormous, ocean-sized backdrop.

lyrics

I lost you in the ocean
It breaks my heart to say
If only I could swim out there…
So precious you to me

If you push me in the water
This only ends one way
Don’t push me in the water
Was the last I heard you say…

I waited for an hour
When I could have waited days
But I’m under so much pressure here
‘Cos I’ve got nowhere to stay

If you come down any harder
This ends the hardest way
Don’t come down any harder
Was the last thing I could say…

And I’m finding it so hard to see…
I’m finding it so hard to breathe…
And I’m finding it so hard to believe…

Dark Water’s killing me…
Dark Water’s killing me
Dark Water’s killing me…
Dark Water’s killing me
